I meet a few friends for Thursday night drinks to enjoy the last dregs of summer.
The Moving Mountains plant burger seems like a fair compromise for a weekday half indulgence.
Firstly, the bun is an inspired choice. A wholemeal seeded affair that has a nice bite and provides the texture that would have been otherwise lacking from the burger. We have the standard inoffensive salad of beefsteak tomato and little gem lettuce. The burger is supringly strong in flavour and heady with savoury mushroom. It manages to leave me sated, on the verge of uncomfortably full, in the way a beef patty would. The addition of creamy avocado works well to add a touch of luxury and loosen the whole thing up very nicely.
The fries honestly could do with being a bit crisper, but are well seasoned with the skin on. The oil tastes fresh, but probably not quite hot enough. The waiter was kind enough to bring me my own little bowl of hot sauce, which helped them go down.
Overall, I wouldn't say I'm a convert, but it's a fair effort at a meat substitute and I'd definitely have it again.
Let's give it a 6.
